Before 1869 the Gilsland congregation met in a schoolroom situated where the Coop building stood in 1969. The chapel was built of stone in 1869-70 at a cost of £551.17.10. The premises comprised a chapel, a vestry or schoolroom, and two rooms above for the caretaker. It was opened by Rev GW Oliver, BA of London on Easter Monday, 18 April 1870. In 1872 a wall and iron railing was erected round the premises. In 1900 Mr James Wilson designed and executed the woodwork of the pulpit. There were 140 sittings in 1873. This had risen to 200, all in pews, by 1940 but fallen to 150 by 1980.
In 1958-9 heating costing £150 was installed.
