DUNSTAN, John Wilfrid 1883 - 1950

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 156

Born at Budock, Cornwall, was reared in the sturdy atmosphere of Cornish Methodism. Educated at Truro School and Queen’s College, Taunton, he was accepted for the Wesleyan Ministry from the Taunton Circuit, and after a pre-collegiate year at Bridport was sent to Handsworth College for training, where he had three successful years.

Entering the active Ministry in 1910, he travelled in various parts of the country, but chiefly in the South of England, and particularly in the Bournemouth District, where he spent almost half of his ministry in the following circuits—Yeovil, Shaftesbury, Portland, and the Stour Valley Mission.

It was during his second term in the Stour Valley Mission that, owing to sudden affliction from which he never recovered, he was forced to ‘ put off the armour ‘ at the Conference of 1949.

In all his circuits he left the impress of his strong personality. He was an acceptable preacher, his sermons giving the impression of careful preparation and thought. He was a diligent pastor, a valuable counsellor, and a wise administrator.

A faithful minister and devoted servant of the Methodist Church, he had many friends, and has left many lives richer for his ministry.

His death occurred at Portland, where he had been living in retirement for several months, on 26th June 1950, in the sixty-seventh year of his age and the fortieth of his ministry.
