WHITE, George Kirby 1860 - 1950

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 142

Born at Helmsley-in-Ryedale in 1860. He entered the Wesleyan Methodist Ministry in 1887. After training at Headingley he was sent as District Missionary to East Anglia, where his zeal for evangelism was blessed with much fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Although most of his ministry was spent in country circuits, he had a life-long interest and concern for the World Church and, especially, for the Gospel in China. He retired to Eastbourne in 1924, and there began an active ministry in varied ways.

His love of sport and his interest in young people led him to take a deep interest in the work of the Y.M.C.A. He gave loyal support to the Free Church Council and sought to further its influence and effectiveness.

He never ceased to continue his preaching ministry, exercising it not only in his own church, but through other organizations and in the open air. It is true to say that his greatest religious absorption was in connection with the Wesley Bible Union, with which movement he had been closely associated from its inception, and long after the pioneers had gone he continued its advocacy.

He was its President at the time of his death. He had a deep zeal and conviction about fundamental Bible truths, and held them with great simplicity and sincerity. He lived to a ripe old age, and his faith sweetened and ripened with the lengthening years.

On 8th February 1950, at the advanced age of nearly ninety years, he answered the call and entered into the joy of his Lord.
