GREEN, Ernest Davis (M.A.) 1871 - 1949

Born in London in 1871. A member of an honoured Methodist family, the son of Dr. Walford Green, who was a President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference. Educated at The Leys School and graduating at Cambridge University, he was accepted for the Wesleyan Methodist Ministry in 1899.

In all his circuits he exercised a ministry of rare quality. In 1923 he became Chairman and District Missionary to the Oxford District, and for eleven years revealed distinguished powers of leadership.

Welcomed always into the pulpits of the city and devoting much time and talent to matters of civic importance, he rejoiced also in ministering to the people of the villages and was a welcomed guest in many humble homes. At his departure to a larger sphere of service a deep sense of loss prevailed throughout the whole of Oxfordshire.

On being appointed Chairman and District Missionary to the Cardiff and Swansea District in 1934, commenced the crowning task of his life. He went to South Wales when it was in the depths of industrial depression, and approached the grievous problems of the District with remarkable administrative ability and with characteristic sympathy and concern.

He brought valuable financial assistance to circuits that were heavily burdened with debt, new hope and vision to churches that appeared to be fighting a losing battle, and unspeakable joy and consolation to many weary lives.

In this self-sacrificing service he spent his powers until retiring to Sheringham in 1944, having completed forty-five years in the active Ministry. Countless people throughout Methodism join in grateful tribute to a Christian gentleman of saintly charm and winsome spirit. We remember the fervour and earnestness of his preaching, his kindly counsel and practical encouragement.

He had a deep love for men and women, a zealous concern for their highest welfare—and the friendship of little children was a possession he valued highly. Always he was a counsellor and guide to his brethren in the Ministry, rejoicing in any opportunity to render brotherly service.

To a large number of ministers who were privileged to work under his direction, the name of Ernest Davis Green will ever be remembered and honoured. His life revealed the spiritual heights man may attain when dedicated completely to the service of Christ, and it remains an abiding inspiration and challenge.

On 5th December 1949 he passed quietly into the Church Triumphant, in the fifty-first year of his ministry.
