LEE, Matthew Herbert 1886 - 1962

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1962, page 214

Born at Wingate, Co. Durham, in 1886. As a young apprentice he was involved in a building accident. Whilst lying in hospital. early religious impressions crystallized in a definite act of self committal to Christ, from which he never afterwards swerved.

He entered the Ministry from Richmond College in 1g12, and served in Crook, Evesham, Stow Mission, Yeovil, Nuneaton, Ipswich, St Leonards, Chichester, Worthing, Liverpool, Coatbridge. Nottingham and Leighton Buzzard.

In every place he won the affection and lasting regard of his people. He was a quiet, modest man, never craving the limelight, but pursuing his course with singular industry, all-round efficiency, and fidelity to his high calling.

His preaching did not strain after oratorical effect, but was simple, earnest, apposite, and always aimed at the spiritual benefit of his hearers. Wherever he went he left the impress of sincerity. friendliness and goodness. A more loyal, brotherly colleague it would be hard to find.

In 1952, when the time came to retire, he settled at Bognor Regis, the scene of an earlier period of ministry. Here he was among old friends who trusted and loved him.

He continued to preach, even after a crippling and painful disease made movement difficult. but he bore all with patience and unbroken serenity.

His life came to a peaceful close on 26 April 1962, in the seventy: sixth year of his age and the fiftieth of his ministry.
