JAMES, Fred 1882 - 1962

Born at Millom in the county of Cumberland in 1882. After being a teacher, he was accepted for the Wesleyan Ministry in 1906.

He spent a year as a pre-collegiate in the Chatteris Circuit before entering Headingley College. In 1910 he joined the staff of the Edinburgh Mission.

The Missionary Society asked him to serve in the English work of the Church overseas, first (from 1917-23) in Calcutta and again (from 1gzC32) in Colombo. He also served in West Bromwich, Sheffield. Wisbech, Brixton Hill, Chiswick and the North of Scotland Mission.

For two years after his superannuation in 1949, he was an active supernumerary in the Kingston on- Thames Circuit.

Full retirement was spent at Burnham-on-Sea. Throughout his ministry, he gave generously of his gifts of wisdom and spiritual insight.

He was’ a preacher of memorable power. As a pastor he united each society he served by a quiet, liberal authority that won the respect and affection of the people. His friendliness was not merely a gift but the consequence of his deep love for the divine Friend and Father.

He was a happy man who inspired happiness and goodness in others. When advancing years made him less able to go to others, they came to him, and always drew help and strength from his understanding and encouraging spirit.

He died on 2 January 1962, in the eightieth year of his age and the fifty-third year of his ministry.
