WINTERSGILL, Matthew 1867 - 1949

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 134

Born at Masham, Yorkshire, in 1867. He entered the Wesleyan Methodist Ministry in 1891. After training at Headingley College, he engaged in Central Mission Work at Greenock, London Camden Town, and Liverpool. Whilst in Macclesfield he was appointed Chairman of the Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield District.

In the Ministry of the Methodist Church he found scope for the exercise of his gifts. A man of fine presence, he combined strength with graciousness.

A careful organizer, faithful visitor, a preacher filled with evangelistic zeal, his aim was to lead others to Christ. A patient listener, wise in counsel, he possessed the ability to transform occasions of difficulty into a means of grace.

Retiring from the active work in 1933, he took up residence in Bingley, where, in the capacity of Supernumerary Minister, he continued to serve his Church. Almost every Sunday he continued to preach, until, returning home after conducting morning worship, he met with the accident which prevented his continuing in the service which lay so close to his heart.

During the months of enforced inactivity one was enabled to discern by his patient endurance, unfailing assurance of Divine goodness, and continued interest in the well-being of others, that the truths he had preached in the days of his activity were the foundations on which his life was built.

He entered into higher service on 30th November 1949, after fifty-eight years of faithful service.
