SELLER, John William 1864 - 1951

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1952, page 123

Born 1864 at Ganton. Trained at Headingley, his active ministry lasted only seventeen years.

During that time he served at Pickering, Loftus, Alston, Bristol, Portsmouth, St. Helens, and Saltbura.

Ill-health prevented his taking up work in the Whitby Circuit, and he settled at Sleights where he lived in retirement for forty-five years.
Unable to continue his loved pulpit work, he wrote and published several children’s books. His pastoral work (which he was able to continue) had an expert quality, and he gave close attention to leading a society class.
He was a keen Nature student, particularly of bird life, and was a cricket enthusiast.

His counsel was much sought and highly esteemed in village government locally.

A man rich in kindliness, his manner was gentle and his judgment was marked bv reasonableness.

He loved his Church well, and in his last illness followed the Conference reports and discussions with much diligence.

He died at Sleights on 15th September 1951 at the age of eighty-seven in the sixty- second year of his ministry.
