PLATT, John Thomas 1882 - 1961

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1962, page 197

Born at Wybunbury, Cheshire in 1882. He entered the Wesleyan Ministry in 1908 after being trained at Headingley.

For forty years he exercised a gracious ministry in the southern and western counties of England with utter devotion to the work of the Church. After a pre-collegiate year at Uttoxeter. he served at Portsmouth, Newport (I.o.W.). Oxford, Newport (Mon.), New Barnet, Paddington, Poole, Bayswater and Chichester.

After retiring he accepted an active supernumerary’s post in Welwyn Garden City, and then spent the last years of his life in Worthing.

As a preacher he was courageous in his search for truth, and the originality of his approach to a subject aroused the lively interest of his congregations.

There was a simplicity and guilelessness about him which were a great source of strength, and he possessed and exercised his full share of administrative gifts and practical wisdom in the care of his Churches.

He was a faithful visitor in the homes of his members, and was a supremely friendly man ; no one in need of help ever went to him in vain. and they were always met with gentleness and courtesy.

He is to be counted among those faithful men who have adorned the ministry of our Church, and who by their sincerity and natural piety have brought many nearer to their Lord.

He will be remembered as a man who was utterly conscientious as a preacher, pastor and superintendent.

In the ten years of his retirement he was able to preach only occasionally in the Worthing circuit and neighbouring churches, and the last years of his life had to be spent quietly because of increasing infirmity.

He died on 19 December 1961, in the fifty-fourth year of his ministry and the eightieth year of his life.
