HARLAND, Edmund Starkey 1875 - 1950

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 145

Born at Scarborough in 1875. He entered the Ministry in 1899, and after training at Headingley College travelled for forty-five years, covering a wide area which embraced both town and country.

Fidelity and fruitfulness characterized all his work.

Since his retirement in 1944 he had lived in Kettering and very actively identified himself with the Central Methodist Church and circuit.

Through his pulpit and pastoral work he quickly won the hearts of all associated with him. Very soon he revealed all the best qualities of the ordinary man. hallowed and refined by the influence of the Holy Spirit and raised to the stature of greatness by a life of sustained devotion and service for Christ and His Church.

He was shrewd, wise, emotional, yet able to temper all his judgements with a just balance of feeling and intellect, and one ever found in him a wise, sympathetic counsellor.

His was a personality radiant with a spiritual quality which imparted an impressive dignity and strength, and made his friendship something to be treasured by those who possessed it.

After a short illness he passed peacefully into the Homeland on 21st March 1950, in the seventy-fifth year of his age and the fifty- first of his ministry.
